What is IMAP?
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is the protocol used to retrieve and manage email messages from a mail server. Unlike POP3, which downloads messages to a single device and typically deletes them from the server, IMAP keeps emails stored on the server and synchronizes them across all connected devices. It operates on port 993 (encrypted) or port 143 (unencrypted).
When you check your email on your phone, laptop, and tablet and see the same inbox state on all three, that's IMAP at work.
