What is Attribution?
Attribution is the analytical process of determining which marketing and sales touchpoints contributed to a conversion, deal, or desired outcome. In B2B, where a prospect might interact with 15-20 touchpoints across 3-6 months before buying, attribution answers the critical question: "What actually influenced this deal?"
Without attribution, you're making investment decisions blindly, pouring money into channels that might not be driving results while underfunding ones that are.
Why Attribution Matters for B2B Sales
B2B buying involves multiple channels (outbound email, paid ads, content, events, referrals), multiple stakeholders, and long sales cycles. Attribution helps you understand which combination of touchpoints drives revenue so you can optimize spend and strategy accordingly.
For outbound teams specifically, attribution validates whether cold email, LinkedIn outreach, or phone calls are driving pipeline, and helps justify continued investment in those channels.
Key Attribution Models
- First-touch: 100% credit to the first interaction (e.g., the cold email that started the conversation)
- Last-touch: 100% credit to the final interaction before conversion (e.g., the demo that closed the deal)
- Linear: Equal credit to every touchpoint in the journey
- Time-decay: More credit to touchpoints closer to conversion
- U-shaped (position-based): 40% to first touch, 40% to lead creation, 20% distributed to middle touches
- W-shaped: 30% each to first touch, lead creation, and opportunity creation, 10% to everything else
Common Mistakes
- Last-touch only: Ignores all the work that created awareness and interest before the final conversion
- Ignoring dark funnel: Not all touchpoints are trackable (podcast mentions, word-of-mouth, Slack communities)
- Over-engineering: A simple model executed consistently beats a complex model executed poorly
- Not asking customers: Self-reported attribution ("How did you hear about us?") is imperfect but valuable
How FlowStrata Handles Attribution
FlowStrata provides transparent multi-touch attribution reporting for all outbound campaigns. We track the outbound touchpoint chain, from initial cold email to reply to meeting to close, and integrate with clients' CRM and marketing tools to show how outbound interacts with other channels. This gives clients a complete picture of how outbound contributes to their pipeline, not just in isolation but as part of their broader go-to-market motion.
