What are UTM Parameters?
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags appended to URLs that tell analytics platforms (Google Analytics, HubSpot, etc.) exactly where your traffic is coming from. They consist of key-value pairs added after a "?" in the URL.
For example: yoursite.com/demo?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=cold-email&utm_campaign=q1-outreach
When someone clicks this URL, your analytics tool records the source, medium, and campaign, giving you precise attribution data.
Why UTM Parameters Matter for B2B Sales
UTMs are the bridge between marketing activity and analytics data. Without them, Google Analytics shows most of your traffic as "direct" or "unknown", making it impossible to measure which campaigns, channels, or content pieces are driving results.
For outbound teams, UTMs on links in cold emails, LinkedIn messages, and follow-up sequences reveal exactly which touchpoints drive website visits, content engagement, and conversions.
Key UTM Parameters
- utm_source: Where the traffic comes from (e.g., linkedin, google, email)
- utm_medium: The marketing medium (e.g., cold-email, cpc, social, organic)
- utm_campaign: The specific campaign name (e.g., q1-sdr-outreach, webinar-promo)
- utm_content: Differentiates similar content or links (e.g., email-1, email-3, cta-button)
- utm_term: The keyword for paid search campaigns
UTM Best Practices
- Consistent naming conventions: Lowercase, hyphens instead of spaces, documented standards
- Be specific: utm_campaign=q1-2025-saas-icp-a beats utm_campaign=outreach
- Track at the email level: Use utm_content to differentiate between steps in a sequence
- Use a UTM builder: Avoid typos by using a standardized UTM generator
Common Mistakes
- Inconsistent capitalization: "LinkedIn" and "linkedin" show up as different sources in analytics
- Too generic: utm_source=email doesn't tell you which campaign the email came from
- Not using UTMs on outbound links: Every link in every email should have UTM parameters
- UTMs on internal links: Only use UTMs on external links, internal UTMs break session tracking
How FlowStrata Uses UTMs
FlowStrata tags every link in every outbound email with standardized UTM parameters. We use a consistent naming convention across all client campaigns so analytics data is clean and actionable. Our UTM structure tracks source (email, linkedin), medium (cold-email, follow-up), campaign (client-specific identifiers), and content (email step number), providing granular attribution data that proves outbound's contribution to pipeline.
