What is a Hard Bounce?
A hard bounce is a permanent email delivery failure. When an email hard bounces, the receiving mail server has definitively rejected the message with no possibility of future delivery to that address. The email address is either invalid, doesn't exist, or the domain has permanently blocked incoming mail.
Hard bounces are the most damaging type of bounce because they indicate a fundamental problem with the email address, not a temporary issue that might resolve itself.
Why Hard Bounces Matter for Outbound
Every hard bounce is a direct hit to your sender reputation. Mailbox providers interpret high hard bounce rates as evidence that you're sending to purchased or scraped lists without verification, a hallmark of spam behavior. Google and Microsoft begin throttling senders with hard bounce rates above 2%, and rates above 5% can trigger domain-level blocks.
Common Causes
- Invalid email addresses: Typos, outdated data, or fabricated addresses
- Non-existent domains: The domain no longer exists or has no MX records
- Deactivated accounts: The recipient's email account has been closed
- Blocked senders: The receiving domain has permanently blocked your domain or IP
- Syntax errors: Malformed email addresses that can't be routed
Key Benchmarks
- Acceptable: Below 2% hard bounce rate
- Warning: 2% - 5%
- Critical: Above 5%, pause sending immediately
Common Mistakes
- Not removing hard bounces immediately: Continuing to send to hard-bounced addresses compounds reputation damage
- Retrying hard bounced addresses: Unlike soft bounces, hard bounces should never be retried
- Skipping email verification: Pre-send validation catches most hard bounces before they happen
- Confusing soft and hard bounces: They require completely different handling strategies
