What is MEDDIC?
MEDDIC is an enterprise sales qualification framework that stands for Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Identify Pain, and Champion. Developed at PTC in the 1990s, it's widely used in complex B2B sales with long cycles and multiple stakeholders.
The Six Components
- Metrics: What quantifiable outcomes does the buyer expect?
- Economic Buyer: Who controls the budget and has final sign-off?
- Decision Criteria: What factors will the buyer use to evaluate solutions?
- Decision Process: What steps, approvals, and timeline define the buying process?
- Identify Pain: What specific business pain is driving the purchase?
- Champion: Who inside the organization will advocate for your solution?
Why MEDDIC Matters
Companies that implement MEDDIC report win rate improvements of 15-25% on enterprise deals. It forces reps to deeply understand the buyer's world rather than just pitching features. In complex B2B sales where deal sizes exceed $50K, MEDDIC prevents reps from wasting months on deals that were never going to close.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing the economic buyer with the end user
- Failing to identify or nurture an internal champion
- Not mapping the full decision process before submitting a proposal
