What is Return-Path?
The Return-Path (also called the "bounce address" or "envelope from") is the email address specified in the email header where bounce messages and delivery failure notifications are routed. It's different from the visible "From" address, the Return-Path is part of the SMTP envelope and is typically hidden from recipients.
When a mail server can't deliver your email (invalid address, full inbox, blocked domain), the bounce notification goes to whatever address is set as the Return-Path.
Why Return-Path Matters for Outbound
In outbound sales, Return-Path configuration directly impacts your DMARC alignment and bounce handling. If the Return-Path domain doesn't align with your "From" domain, DMARC SPF alignment fails, even if SPF itself passes. This is one of the most common and overlooked causes of deliverability issues in cold email campaigns.
