What is SAL (Sales Accepted Lead)?

A lead formally accepted by the sales team from marketing, acknowledging it meets the agreed-upon qualification criteria.

What is a SAL?

A Sales Accepted Lead (SAL) is a lead that has been reviewed and accepted by the sales team after being passed from marketing. It's the critical handoff point where sales agrees the lead meets baseline qualification criteria and commits to working it.

The Lead Lifecycle

  1. Lead → Raw contact/prospect
  2. MQL → Marketing says "this looks promising"
  3. SAL → Sales says "I accept this and will follow up"
  4. SQL → Sales says "this is a real opportunity"

Why SALs Matter

The SAL stage prevents the most common source of sales-marketing conflict: marketing claiming they sent great leads while sales says the leads were garbage. With an explicit acceptance step, both teams have accountability and measurable SLAs.

Common Mistakes

  • Not having a formal SAL process (leads just go into a queue)
  • Sales cherry-picking leads and ignoring others
  • No time-bound SLA for sales to accept or reject leads
