What is SQL (Sales Qualified Lead)?

A lead vetted by the sales team that meets specific criteria indicating readiness for a direct sales conversation.

What is an SQL?

A Sales Qualified Lead (SQL) is a prospect who has been vetted by the sales team and confirmed to meet the criteria for a genuine sales opportunity. Unlike an MQL (marketing qualified), an SQL has been spoken to by a rep who has verified fit and interest.

SQL Qualification Criteria

  • Confirmed need that aligns with your solution
  • Budget exists or can be allocated
  • Decision-maker is identified and accessible
  • Active buying timeline (usually within 3-6 months)
  • No disqualifying factors (wrong industry, too small, competitor client)

Why SQLs Matter

The MQL-to-SQL conversion rate is a key indicator of alignment between marketing and sales. If marketing sends 100 MQLs but sales only accepts 10 as SQLs, something is broken. Average MQL-to-SQL conversion: 13-20% for well-aligned teams.

Common Mistakes

  • Not having a clear, agreed-upon SQL definition
  • Counting meetings as SQLs before qualification
  • Conflating interest with qualification
