What is Secondary Domain?

A separate domain used exclusively for outbound email campaigns to protect the primary business domain's reputation.

What is a Secondary Domain?

A secondary domain (also called an outbound domain or satellite domain) is a domain registered specifically for sending cold email campaigns, separate from your primary business domain. For example, if your company website is acme.com, your secondary domains might be tryacme.com, getacme.com, or acmesolutions.com.

The purpose is simple: isolate outbound sending risk from your primary domain so that if something goes wrong with cold email deliverability, your business email, website SEO, and customer communications remain unaffected.

Why Secondary Domains Matter for Outbound

Cold email is inherently risky. Even well-executed campaigns can trigger complaints, hit spam traps, or suffer deliverability dips. If you're sending cold email from your primary domain and it gets blacklisted, your entire organization can't send email, including internal communication, customer support, and transactional emails.

Secondary domains provide a firewall between your outbound experiments and your mission-critical business communications.

Key Setup Requirements

  • Domain selection: Choose domains that look similar to your primary domain for brand consistency
  • DNS configuration: Full SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and MX record setup on each secondary domain
  • Google Workspace / Microsoft 365: Set up business email accounts on each domain
  • Warmup protocol: 2-4 weeks of gradual sending volume increase per domain
  • Forwarding: Set up a redirect from the secondary domain to your main website

Common Mistakes

  • Cheap/spammy domain names: Domains that look like spam (e.g., acme-deals-now.com) get flagged immediately
  • Too many domains: 2-3 secondary domains is standard; 10+ creates management nightmares
  • No website or forwarding: A secondary domain with no web presence looks suspicious
  • Shared DNS providers: Using the same DNS as known spam domains can hurt by association
  • Skipping warmup: The most common and most damaging mistake

How FlowStrata Sets Up Secondary Domains

FlowStrata provisions and configures secondary domains for every client engagement. We select brand-appropriate domain names, set up complete DNS authentication, configure Google Workspace accounts, implement structured warmup over 2-4 weeks, and monitor reputation across all domains. We typically recommend 2-3 secondary domains with 3-5 inboxes each, providing enough sending capacity while keeping individual volume well within safe limits.
